The exhibition in CSW Kronika is a summary of a certain stage in Małgorzata Goliszewska’s personal life and artistic practice. The project mixes with the artist’s first works, thad defined her further path, all very personal and almost voyeuristic.
The viewer, pulled by the need to observe others, enters a world of a complicated mother-daughter relationship. As the artist admits, this bond was the beginning of her artistic path, and art served as a form of therapy back then. The tragicomical overtone of this relationship gave Goliszewska no choice but to focus on it with her art practice. Naturally, the mother is one’s earliest authority, the first role-model. At the same time, this relationship is burdened with natural antagonisms. The artist, seeing her mother’s life failures, does not want to repeat them, so in her adult life she searches for a new source of knowledge and experience. On the way, she meets many mentors, guides and teachers. She seeks masters of truth in astrologists and authors of dozens of self-help books. She looks for her new guide, and after an initial euphoria when she finds one, an inevitable crisis occurs and she starts her search anew. Gradually, the authority of a wise man and wise woman becomes the most important, the one that comes from life experience, wisdom, and embraces not only the knowledge about everyday problems but also about the meaning of existence. Goliszewska searches for that at senior dancing clubs, in sanatoria and in long conversations with mature females.
This is how she finds her own women elders, who turn out to be treasures of life wisdom. She meets Jolka, a woman in her sixties, with a brutal past, who despite her age and difficult experiences, starts singing again and dreaming about her first love. At the same time, the artist accidentally meets a retired natural sciences professor, who turns out to be an expert in love and who secretly writes and publishes self-help books under the nickname of Alina Dunin.
Another relationship is established, one based on advising, wisdom and support – another substitute for maternal authority. After going through a stage of total disappointment with men and feverish searches for understanding, Goliszewska experiences a moment of relief - in the warmth and wisdom of the mature women that surround her. In such a group, conversations are not the most important thing, sometimes it is just enough to dance.
Małgorzata Goliszewska (1985) – visual artist and documentary filmmaker, graduate of the Art Academy in Szczecin and Wajda School in Warsaw, currently a PhD student at Art University in Poznan. She exhibited her works in Russia, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Italy, Austria, USA and more. She made her debut in 2010 with the film Dress me. Prizewinner of many artistic and film festivals, awarded with the Young Poland scholarship, laureate of the Hestia Artistic Journey competition, resident of the Museumsquartier in Vienna. Currently she is working on a feature-lenght documentary in cooperation with HBO. Founder of no longer existing: artistic group LOVE and Artist-in-Residence BED. She attends psychotherapy since three years.
During the finissage on 29th June (Friday) at 6 PM there will be organized a curatorial guided tour and harpsichord concert of Maurycy Raczyński.
