Paweł Kulczyński. Lament

Paweł Kulczyński | Lament | instalacja dźwiękowa | 2013

W gliwickiej Fabryce Drutu powstaje instalacja dźwiękowa, będąca jednocześnie artystycznym komentarzem do zachodzących w centrum miasta przemian modernizacyjnych. W ramach międzynarodowego projektu artystycznego A Place Where We Could Go realizowanego przez Fundację Imago Mundi i bytomskie CSW Kronika, artysta dźwiękowy Paweł Kulczyński przygotowuje pracę - rzeźbę akustyczną, bazującą częściowo na chóralnym utworze z okresu renesansu, Lamentacje Jeremiasza, angielskiego kompozytora Thomasa Tallisa.

O projekcie A Place Where We Could Go:
A Place Where We Could Go (tytuł zapożyczony z piosenki Jeremy Jay´a) stanowi część międzynarodowego programu Projekt Metropolis współorganizowanego przez Fundację Imago Mundi, CSW Kronika w Bytomiu i Muzeum Śląskie.

a part of the project A Place Where We Could Go
place: Former Wire Factory, Dubois St. 22, Gliwice

21st September - 5th October, Tue-Sat 3 - 6pm

opening: 21st September, 6pm
curator: Stanisław Ruksza

In the Gliwice Wire Factory a sound installation is being created that is at the same time an artistic commentary on the modernisation taking place in the city centre. As part of the international art project A Place Where We Could Go produced by the Imago Mundi Foundation and the CSW Kronika, the sound artist Paweł Kulczyński has been working on a sculpture, based partially on the choral Renaissance composition Lamentations of Jeremiah by the English composer Thomas Tallis. The installation, which consists of five 3 m high, smooth, white pipes/columns, has been set in the production hall of a factory the windows of which look out on to a nearby park and municipal palm house and a dual-carriageway under construction in the centre of the city - the Gliwice section of the Central Highway linking the cities of Upper Silesia.

Thus, the noises of construction that can be heard from the vicinity of the building automatically become part of the composition. The project also uses field recordings made on the construction site. The sounds follow the tune and harmonies of Tallis's composition. Choral recordings and synthetic elements, together combining into an aurally rich whole.

For Paweł Kulczyński this is a very personal work related to his home city, in which, due to ill-thought out decisions made by the local council, in the very heart of the city, along municipal parks, the river and the university campus there is being built a high-speed road that separates and breaks up public space. Hence, the installation's ambiguous title: Lamentations.

As the artist has himself commented on his project: "I'm hoping I'm wrong and things will take a different course, although, on past experience, I don?t have high hopes. All that's left is to sit down and weep; and that is what I'm doing, by means of my work. This is a helpless cry of protest against processes over which I have no influence but which touch directly on my life."

The opening of the project, accompanied by the concert by the artist, who will appear as Wilhelm Bras, will take place on 21 September, starting at 6 pm

About the project A Place Where We Could Go:

A Place Where We Could Go, a title borrowed from a song by Jeremy Jay, is part of an international program known as the Metropolis Project, organised jointly by the Imago Mundi Foundation, CCA Kronika of Bytom and the Silesian Museum. Using the various tools of modern art, the project takes up a debate about places of complex identity and stigmatised through stereotypes as well as brings up new or forgotten mental spaces of the region of Upper Silesia and Zagłębie Dąbrowskie which becomes an art lab for the duration of the project.

The site specific part of the work will be exhibited in various public city spaces across the conurbation. The entire project will evaluate exhibitions and presentations of the project in Poland and the partner institutions. The exhibitions will be accompanied by a bilingual publication. The project involves: Magda Fabiańczyk, Rafał Jakubowicz, Erla S. Haraldsdóttir, Lars Holdhus, Paul Kulczyński, Darrie Lorenzen, Krystian Skylstad, Łukasz Surowiec, Fredric Vaerslev.

The project is partnered by the Icelandic Art Centre, Reykjavik Art Museum and the Kunsthalle Grenland.
